Today I did a quick grocery run. I got 2 lemons, a few potatoes and a big oatmeal raison cookie. At the end of checkout the cashier asked if I wanted the cookie or to bag it.
This shouldn’t be a big deal but it bothered me. I’m overweight and the thing that keeps going through my head is the cashier put out some personal prejudice toward overweight people and assumed I wanted to engulf that cookie as soon a possible. It’s an asshat move.
I try not to be overly sensitive about these types of things but I’m often wondering what cashiers must think about all the items that go through and the assumptions they make about people based on what they buy.
I ask that cashiers just bag the stuff and don’t make judgements. If the person doesn’t want it bagged they’ll let you know.
